Europa: Unlocking the Secrets of an Ocean World

Friday August 1, 2025 at 7:00pm

Rain Date: Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 7:00pm

Far beyond Earth, orbiting the giant planet Jupiter, lies a frozen moon with astonishing potential: Europa. Beneath its cracked and ridged icy crust, scientists believe a vast, global ocean hides more water than all of Earth’s oceans combined. Could this alien sea harbor the conditions necessary for life?

Join NASA Solar System Ambassador M.J. Johnson as he guides you through the unfolding story of Europa. From its early exploration by the Galileo spacecraft to the thrilling discoveries by the more recent Juno mission. You’ll learn how scientists look for water on other worlds, and how Europa’s internal ocean remains one of the most promising environments for life in our solar system.

The journey continues with a look at NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, launched in 2024 and designed to conduct ground-breaking science that may help answer one of humanity’s oldest questions: is there life on other worlds?

Stick around afterward and view the heavens yourself through telescopes made available courtesy of the Aldrich Astronomical Society!

This non-technical presentation is appropriate for all ages.
